Cap Malhereux

Within the beautiful District of Riviere du Rempart, at the north, rests a picturesque place known as “the unfortunate cape”: Cap Malhereux. The fishing village takes its name back from 1810, when the British strategically landed here to defeat the French (established on the South-West) in a surprising inland attack from the North. Nowadays, it is well-known for its red-roof church surrounded by flamboyant trees with their equally red tops during summer.

The place is very popular among tourists to admire Notre Dame de l’Auxiliatrice overseeing turquoise waters and the island of Gunners Coin (Coin de Mire). The beach, sprinkled with colourful wooden boats, makes a perfect place to picnic the day away. A piece of advice: talk to locals – you might find a friendly fisherman willing to take you for a ride on his boat for a better fee than in commercial areas. On Sunday mornings mass is well attended by locals, imparted in Creole and accompanied by its cheerful chorus.
