The main city of the Grand Port district was established back in the times of the Dutch settlement. After the main port was moved to Port Louis, Mahébourg’s bay and streets were left alone for local fishermen, busy markets and a slow-paced life with the beautiful backdrop of The Lion Mountain.
The city of Mahébourg invites visitors for a walk in its beautiful cobble-stone waterfront, where local fishermen spend their days on their wooden pirogues. On Monday’s bazaar, very close to the bay, you’ll find local handicrafts, fresh produce and limitless street food. There is a Naval History Museum, portraying the story of the battles fought in that same bay between the French Navy and the Royal Navy, as well as a presentation of our famous teak wood ship models built by Mauritian hands. In Biscuiterie Rault you’ll find a small but prestigious family-run business that creates biscuits out of manioc flour, the only one in the world! See the process from plant to packaging in their traditional factory and finish the tour with a biscuit degustation.
