tamarin village

Tamarin

Back in the 60’s – 70’s Mauritius’ Tamarin Bay was well known for its world-class surfing waves. They were probably THE happening since the abolition of slavery, until natural sand replacement changed their course and the world’s attention to other coasts. Today, Tamarin stands nostalgic but proud as the preferred surfing spot for Mauritians, where small breaks help beginners ride their first waves inside the bay and good ole’ rights and lefts welcome experienced surfers closer to the reef.

The favorite coast for surfers happens to be as well the place to find bigger mammals. Almost everyday dolphins come to our west coast to sleep, socialize and mate, for it has become a popular tourist attraction to “swim with dolphins”, practiced by dozens of motor boats and catamarans everyday. In your Conscious Guide opinion, dolphins and whales deserve much peace and privacy to do their affairs, as we don’t wish them to migrate to far-away waters. But, if you are keen in having a closer glimpse, then we support doing it in a kayak excursion. The experience will be much more rewarding and sustainable.

As for the beach, you’ll find locals and travelers sharing the shadows of Filao trees; some practicing slack-line, others eating boulettes and faratas, all sharing the beautiful mountainous backdrop of Les Trois Mamelles. The village is well-worth a visit to enjoy its surfer vibe and street art. As for its nightlife, they won’t let you down; Tamarin is home to well-known bars and a fairly young population who loves to jam the nights away.
